News 04/15/08 - Update on our first print run.
Ok, so I have just sent issues 2 and 3 off to the printer, and issue 1 is in the process of printing right now.
So what exactly has been the hold-up you ask?
Well I’ve been making many, many small and a few large revisions to the art in issues 2 and 3. We haven’t made any actual story changes, although Jason has made a few minor changes to the dialogue here and there. I substantially altered the coloring on the issue 1 cover, and I did new covers for issues 2 and 3. For various reasons I’ve found that I was just not happy with how several things looked in the second 2 issues, particularly Lily’s face on a number of pages, Iri’s hair, and various other things, so I’ve retouched at least something on almost every page of issues 2 and 3. Some things needed changing because they worked ok for the page size on the website, but not for print. Some pages needed some more attention to the background detail. Some things I knew I would need to change all along and some things I decided to change at the last minute. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve gone from being really happy with my work, to thinking I totally suck, to being moderately happy again. So it goes. Hopefully the conventions we attend this year will make it all worth the extra effort.
A note for loyal readers on the numbering of issues 1, 2 and 3. When we began the comic we had planned to treat it as if it were a bi-monthly publication, and paced the chapters (issues) accordingly. When I realized that I did not reliably have time to keep up with that work load we made some changes to some of the chapter pacing, which resulted in the website chapters getting longer than we had meant them to be. While making these books ready for print it because obvious that issues were a bit too long, and the pacing that we had originally intended worked a lot better, both for story pacing and for page count.  So here’s how the pages and chapters break out for the print books.
Chapter 1/Issue 1 “Spring” ends on page 22, rather than page 26 as it currently ends on the website.
Chapter2/Issue 2 “Crossroads” ends on page 46.
Chapter 3/Issue3 “The Oath” ends on page 69.
We plan to reconcile these differences between the chapter breaks on the website and the printed comic soon, but we have not yet done so.
What does all of this mean for readers? This means that I've finished getting the bulk of my print/convention stuff done and can now devote myself to making new pages again. Since it's been so long since I've updated I'll post page 88 as soon as I finish it. Hopefully that will be by Thursday or Friday (Probably Friday). That’s my goal, but since it’s Tuesday afternoon and I haven’t yet started penciling page 88, don’t be terribly surprised if it’s not up till Saturday. I’ve been putting in some long days to get things ready for print and my wife has let me know that she’d like some of my time as well.
